Burton and Depp reveal their worst ideas
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, who have had one of the most successful, if eccentric pairings in Hollywood, have actually been working together now for 20 years! And the celebratory vehicle for two decades of creative partnership is none other than the fantastically strange Alice In Wonderland.
However, along with the best kind of creative energy that has flowed between the two, there have been some real stinkers, which the duo have no shame in admitting, in fact as Burton puts it, the worst idea they have bounced off each other was, “”Maybe just any time I’ve called him”.
Johnny Depp goes a little further back in time to reveal one of the more kooky things Burton has said to him.
“I remember one morning on Sleepy Hollow,” says Depp, “I came in to block a scene, getting a cup of coffee – you’re only half awake. Tim was there, giggling a little bit.” When Depp asked Tim what was up with him, the director replied, “Well, this is where we’re going to strap you to this large metal thing – which is attached to these giant horses – and then we’ll drag you across two soundstages for the entire day.”
Depp spent the afternoon being pulled around by horses, on what he recalls being Christmas Eve, and surprisingly still didn’t question whether working with Burton was a good idea!
In fact, between the two of them, they have also discussed doing H.R Pufnstuf, a life-size puppet show that ran for about three seasons in the early ’70s, with Depp playing Freddy the Golden Flute.
And while this might have been a joke, we hope Tim Burton’s take on H.R Pufntstuf does transpire – after all, Depp did do his ‘Freddy’ when it came up, which according to Burton, was just “perfect!”
